Thrift Finds for May

Friday, May 31, 2013 1:01 PM

May was a five-paycheck month, meaning I had an additional $25 to spend, but I only made one thrifting trip because I felt broke from other purchases. I spent more than usual on alcohol (needed tequila and gin for summer drinks) and cosmetics (mascara, two nail polishes and eyeshadow for my brows). But that also didn't stop me from shelling out today for a pair of jeans on eBay that I'd missed at LOFT a couple of months ago.

Lanvin silk scarf, Goodwill Falmouth, $5
Pendleton silk scarf, Goodwill Falmouth, $4

Falmouth's Goodwill store had an unusual number of silk scarves when I stopped in there a couple of weeks ago. It even seemed that they all could have been donated by the same person, given that they shared some classic prints like plaids, geometrics and riding or nautical themes, plus lots of reds and blues. I came away with these two.

It's always interesting to see when a thrift store knows they have something valuable and when they don't seem to realize it. On this same thrifting trip, I came across a pair of Lucky Brand jeans priced at $20, but the Lanvin scarf was priced the same as any other silk scarf (for a little perspective, the cheapest scarves start at $2, and I bought my Liberty of London scarf at the same store last year for $8).

On Its Way Out

When I got home, J told me he really liked this skirt. But it was too late — I'd already decided I was finished with it. I picked it up at Goodwill for $5 last year and have worn it a handful of times. It's wrinkle-prone, attracts a lot of lint and has a lining that clings to my thighs when I stand up. I like the graphic, black-and-white print, but not enough to put up with those annoyances. It's going back to Goodwill.

Same Belt

Wednesday, May 29, 2013 10:50 PM

I've had this outfit in mind for about two months but had to wait until a day when I could wear a sweater and go bare-legged at the same time. It worked out so that I wore the same belt twice in a row, which was not at all intentional. This red belt is a little small to wear over the top of this skirt, so at some point during the day I untucked the sweater and cinched the belt higher and tighter on my waist.

Also, when I said in that previous post that my only pencil skirt yet unworn with this turquoise sweater was the gray one, I had forgotten about my navy pencil skirt, so that's still remaining. Then I bought another pencil-ish skirt last month, but I'm not sure I want to wear that one with this sweater.

A Match in Pixels

Tuesday, May 28, 2013 11:30 PM

The camera is unforgiving in some ways, like highlighting wrinkles that don't register to the naked eye. But sometimes it works to my benefit, like when I wear a belt that almost-not-quite matches my blouse, but in a photo the reds come out just the same.

Outdoor Adventures

Monday, May 27, 2013 11:30 PM

This was my first adventure taking a self-portrait in public. I was about to take pictures this morning when I realized I'd left the camera in the car on Sunday after J and I went to see Rattlesnake Gorge and Rattlesnake Pool in western Maine and then stopped in Fryeburg for barbecue on the way back.

I was going to work early, so I figured I'd be home early enough to take pictures after work. But then I was there longer than expected, partly because of waiting for other people to send me things and partly because of why-am-I-working-on-a-holiday procrastination. The sun was about to start setting before I started my hour-long commute, so I pulled into an empty parking lot near the office and propped up the camera with my jacket to snap a few pictures.

They didn't come out all that well, what with the lighting and the ugly parking lot and the flat hair. It's a good thing the outfit was only mediocre, too.

Not on a Crew

Friday, May 24, 2013 11:30 PM

With a white shirt, a jaunty scarf in these colors can easily skew toward "flight attendant." I certainly wouldn't want to wear them with a navy skirt and pumps.

Computer Complaints

Thursday, May 23, 2013 11:30 PM

We all got new computers at my office today. Now I can open Microsoft Office documents, use websites with Flash and access a key database, none of which were possible because software updates had passed my old computer by, it was so old. The downside is that I'm using Windows for the first time in five years, and I have NO IDEA what I'm doing. Most guides for transitioning between one system and the other seem to be written for PC users switching over to Macs, but I'm figuring it out one Google search at a time.

Let It Out

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 11:53 PM

I knew these pants had shrunk, but it wasn't until the last time I wore them that I realized that they were just way too short. So I let out the hems, but they didn't come out as well as my last hand-sewn hemming job. I had very little material to work with, and they came out a bit uneven, with some stitches visible. Fortunately, no one's looking at my feet in close-up.

May Showers

Tuesday, May 21, 2013 11:01 PM

I just washed all my tights the other night while watching Mad Men because I was sure I wouldn't need them again until September at least. Then we had a rainy, 52-degree day, I hadn't shaved, and I decided I'd rather wear a skirt than pants. This is it for sure, though, no matter what the weather does in the next couple of weeks.

Wave Experiments

Monday, May 20, 2013 11:30 PM

For the past couple of years, since I started paying more attention to my appearance, I've been consistently blow-drying my hair straight because I haven't figured out how to coax out the natural waves in my hair without getting lots of frizz, too. So I spent the weekend experimenting. With a new curl cream, some scrunching and air-drying, I got two days of acceptable curls/waves. Today I brushed them out and ended up with frizzy, softer waves. I think tomorrow I'll flatiron my hair into submission and resume the experiments this weekend.

10 ways to Wear a Khaki Skirt

Sunday, May 19, 2013 10:59 PM

I know khaki is kind of passé, but I find it handy to have a light-colored, neutral skirt, especially in a ladylike, feminine shape. Clearly my favorite colors to pair with it are pink and blue.

Casual'd

Friday, May 17, 2013 11:30 PM

Today I repeated the springy color combination from this outfit a couple of weeks ago and casual'd it up with a knotted chambray shirt.

Not the Right Two Tones

Thursday, May 16, 2013 11:30 PM

Today's outfit was translated quite literally from this image I saw on Banana Republic's website a couple of months ago: black-and-white print top, red skirt, black belt and two-tone pumps. I'm on the lookout for a pair of black-and-white pumps because a) the lighter color on these is actually a fairly rich cream, and b) they have a strong girly, retro vibe that I don't always want. I want to find something in stark black and white and a more modern style.

Tricksy Scarf

Wednesday, May 15, 2013 10:47 PM

I did a lot of fussing with my scarf while taking pictures this morning. Everything looked fine in person and in the mirror, but on the camera screen, it looked like the scarf was eating my torso. Eventually I figured out how to arrange it so it wouldn't appear far more voluminous than it was.
