Flerm/Flurm

I'm really going to miss "30 Rock." But I don't know how to spell the last word from the show.

I Just Blue Myself

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 11:30 PM

This outfit started with the realization I hadn't worn my navy pencil skirt in months (not since September, it appears). And then I realized I'd probably never worn it with my navy tights. At that point, it was obvious I had to stick with the dark blues and go monochromatic.

By the way, who else is super-psyched for new "Arrested Development"?

Burgundy, Black and Gray

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 10:46 PM

At a meeting I attended yesterday, there was a woman wearing burgundy pants. They weren't jeans, they weren't skinny, they were just super-professional slacks in an interesting color, which is so rare. She was wearing them with a black turtleneck and a big gray vest, belted. I love burgundy, black and gray together, so I did my own version today.

Involuntary Pants

Monday, January 28, 2013 10:26 PM

Last winter, I challenged myself to wear pants for an entire week because I default to skirts and dresses so often.

Last week, I wore pants every day not because I wanted to, but because it was freakin' freezing, with highs in the single digits a couple of days. Sometimes, even layered tights and boots aren't enough to keep my legs warm. I needed pants with wool socks and silk long underwear underneath. Today it reached the mid-20s — positively balmy! I was glad to be back in a dress.

Mint and Navy Stripes

Sunday, January 27, 2013 10:51 PM

This is not an outfit so much as an assemblage of different pieces I threw together because I like them and couldn't think of anything else to do. Although I did see a cute polka-dotted blouse at Target the other day that reminded me how good mint and navy look together.

Casual Saturday

Saturday, January 26, 2013 10:55 PM

I cut myself extra slack when it comes to getting dressed for weekend shifts. This is pretty much the most casual thing I could ever justify wearing to work.

10 Ways to Wear a Chambray Shirt

Friday, January 25, 2013 11:30 PM

I spent months searching thrift and consignment shops for a chambray shirt. I kept coming across shirts that were short-sleeved, too dark, too boxy, made of stiff denim or embroidered with flowers or stars. So when I found a shirt at American Eagle that was nearly perfect, I broke down and bought it, even though it was $40, more than I'd spent on any piece of clothing in half a year. Determined to get my money's worth, I wore the shirt something like six times in the first month, and I reached 10 blogged outfits relatively quickly.

Things I want to do with this chambray shirt: Layer it under sweaters other than my white one. Wear more denim-on-denim. Wear it with colors other than red — like maybe with my yellow pencil skirt.

Mixed Quartet

Thursday, January 24, 2013 11:56 PM

I started this outfit by mixing two black-and-white patterns. The pairing became a quartet of patterns when I bundled up as I have all this week: ovals, houndstooth and two herringbones.

Suited

Wednesday, January 23, 2013 10:35 PM

Wearing a blazer with trousers is a bit too suit-like for me. I'm already more dressed-up than my coworkers, many of whom wear jeans every day. But today, when my nose hairs and membranes froze every time I walked outside, it was nice to have a blazer for warmth. So I chose a jacket and pants in different but complementary colors to look a little less businessy.

It's Cold

Tuesday, January 22, 2013 11:30 PM

And it's about to get colder. We're supposed to have wind chills below zero the next two days. I already wore silk long underwear on top and bottom today, and these are cashmere socks. I'll have to devise ways to bundle up more, but one thing is for sure — it's boots the rest of this week! My feet were really cold today.

Zermatt

12:00 PM

Zermatt, Switzerland is an amazing place, an absolute winter wonderland. Just picture a little town in the Swiss Alps, full of charming chalets and no cars, covered in the 20 feet of snow that had fallen in the first two months of winter, and that's Zermatt.

I had never heard of the place before this trip, but it's at the base of the Matterhorn, and it's one of Europe's top ski resorts. J and I didn't go skiing, in part because we had only two days there, and in part because the handful of times I've been skiing were all five-plus years ago, and I didn't think I could handle the Alps. But the slopes were covered in perfect powder — not icy snow like we often have in New England — and the trails were wide, treeless and not too steep. J and I now really want to go back and try them out, but Switzerland is hella expensive, so it's going to be awhile before we can save up for it.

It was snowing the night we arrived. I decided to throw some into the air.
Leaving Zermatt to hike two hours up the mountain to lunch in Findeln
We met a Spanish dog along the way.

Fresh snow, yum!
J's dad, me and his mom on the trail. It was just the four of us on the hike.
At the Matterhorn Museum, the rope that snapped on the first successful climb of the mountain. Four people fell to their deaths on the way back down.

After 36 hours in Zermatt, the weather cleared enough for our first view of the Matterhorn.
On a gondola up to Klein Matterhorn near the top
I totally conquered this Matterhorn.
Into the glacier ...
... to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, full of sculptures carved into the living glacier.
