African Violet

Tuesday, April 30, 2013 11:30 PM

So I finally hemmed these pants. I tried two types of iron-on hemming tape, and both were crap, so last night I sat down and hand-sewed these while watching TV. I'm grateful for the pattern, which is hiding some stitches that would probably look awful if you could see them.

literate & stylish

This week I'm taking part in the Pantone color challenge that Literate & Stylish and The Modern Austen put together. This kameez is the only piece I own in emerald, Pantone's color of the year.

10 Ways to Wear a High-Collared, Black-and-White Blouse

Sunday, April 28, 2013 11:05 PM

I love this blouse. It's great for mixing black-and-white patterns (though apparently I've done that only twice), first of all. It's 100 percent cotton, so it's very comfortable for summer, but it also layers really well under sweaters for winter. I've worn the blouse with a lot of different colors, mostly brights. One of the trends I see here is that I often pull my hair back when I wear this blouse, probably because it has such a high collar.

The blouse is Charter Club (which I guess is a Macy's house brand?) that I bought at a consignment shop for $8.

I sometimes layer a button-front shirt underneath my houndstooth dress, like so, to create a sort of a schoolgirl look. It was unintentional, but todays' outfit seemed schoolboyish to me. In spite of the skirt, it's got much more of a menswear bent than most of what I wear.

Cooler Coral

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 11:12 PM

It doesn't look like much on camera, but this is my favorite lip color recently: Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter in Raspberry Pie, dabbed on lightly (it's apparently the most opaque of the Lip Butter shades), with Revlon Super Lustrous gloss in Coral Reef over the top. I love the idea of a coral gloss or lipstick for spring, but the ones I've tried are too orange for me. This way, I get a little pink that works better with my complexion. Do any of you know of a single lipcolor that's pink with a touch of coral?

Hot Pink

Tuesday, April 23, 2013 11:45 PM

Bright pink for the second day in a row. It didn't crack 50 today, but at least part of my outfit looks like spring, even though I had to wear tights under the skirt.

Deep Purple

Monday, April 22, 2013 11:55 PM

I broke one of my weekly rules by wearing the same shoes not just twice in one week, but on two consecutive days. I just picked up these flats last week, and I wanted to try them out with my purple tights. The tights are a bit lighter and bluer (though not as blue as they photograph), but not so different that they don't work with the flats.

Sweater Stretch

Sunday, April 21, 2013 11:31 PM

A few years ago, I bought this sweater at Target and an identical black one. It's impressive that they've held up so well, especially because I have to wash them after pretty much every wearing (whereas I'll wear other things a few times between washings) because they stretch out so badly. The sleeves on this one reached halfway down my hands, so I rolled them up, which I'll admit does look a little strange. It's into the hamper with it tonight.

Skirt Substitution

Saturday, April 20, 2013 11:43 PM

Today's outfit was easy because it's pretty much the same as this one. I just substituted a longer skirt to make it work-appropriate for my Saturday shift.

When Half is Nearly All

Friday, April 19, 2013 10:47 PM

Some blog inside baseball today. I typically tag outfits as "(nearly) all secondhand" if only one or two items were purchased new. But it's a little flexible. I'll give a pass to tights because they should never be purchased used, and I also take the prominence of the items into account. Today only three of the six parts of my outfit were purchased secondhand, but I'll count it as nearly all because the new pieces are less visible than the blazer, skirt and shoes.

Trench Time

Thursday, April 18, 2013 11:00 PM

J and I bought each other trench coats for our second wedding anniversary, for which the traditional gift is cotton. By the time our anniversary arrived in mid-October, we'd found a trench coat that worked for J (this one — classic khaki and single-breasted because he's too broad-chested for a double-breasted coat), but J had to order and return several coats for me. I wanted one that was either navy or gray and fairly classic in its details, which was harder to find than it seemed it should have been. And several of them were just too big.

I wouldn't have expected to find the right coat at Target, but this one is fully lined and has a nice weight to the fabric. By the time it arrived, though, the season for trench coats had passed. After six months, I was so excited to finally pull my new coat out this week!

Illusory Bulge

Wednesday, April 17, 2013 11:22 PM

I've been waiting for bare-leg weather to put together a springy outfit based on the colors from this dress. I buttoned the cardigan partway so that it would show the sweater underneath without hanging limply open, but now that I see these photos, it looks like my stomach was bulging and I couldn't button the cardigan over it.

10 Ways to Wear a Boyfriend Blazer

Tuesday, April 16, 2013 1:02 PM

This isn't actually a boyfriend blazer, in that it was not intended either as menswear or as an oversized women's blazer. It's just that I bought it at a thrift store, and the cut is very out of date. It's my normal size from Banana Republic and fits in the shoulders, but it's long and too roomy in the waist. Plus, check out those gigantic lapels!

It took me some time to figure out how to wear this blazer. Eventually, though, I realized it should be paired with garments that offset the oversized cut, such as shorter skirts or skinny pants. It also helps to roll up the sleeves, but I don't always do that in winter.
