Now that I list all the pieces of this outfit, I'm realizing that I didn't pay full price for a single one. In fact, between gifts, thrift store finds and a Target clearance sale, I paid only $12 for all this!

Thrift Finds for February

Wednesday, February 27, 2013 11:11 PM

You're unlikely to see either of this month's purchases on the blog; one because it's an undergarment, and the other because I don't include bags in my outfit posts.

Black full slip, Goodwill Augusta, $5
This meets two needs I had. The silver dress I bought last month requires a camisole or some other undergarment because the neckline is cut so low my bra shows. And I've needed a shorter black slip because the one I have is too long for many of my skirts and dresses; I've had to wear my white one even with dark clothes. It seems like most slips sold in stores these days are shapewear, so I was glad to find this older one at Goodwill.

Black The Limited purse, Goodwill Augusta, $2
The Goodwill stores in Maine never seem to have good purses. This one's not leather or anything, only fabric, but the detachable strap is made with a nice, heavy chain, and I've already carried it as both a crossbody bag and a clutch. And not only did I get it for half-off, but it still had a price tag attached that said $40.

Prep Time

Tuesday, February 26, 2013 11:38 PM

One photo today. I hit snooze once more than I should have, even though I'd timed my alarm based on the time I knew I needed to get out the door and the very consistent 90 minutes it takes for my morning routine of shower/dress/put on face/eat breakfast/make lunch/take pictures. When my hair needs washing, the washing and blow-drying add an extra 30 minutes. I can sometimes cut my prep time by about 10 minutes if I decide not to shower, or I wear something simple that doesn't require fussing with layers, like this outfit did. On the other hand, it takes a bit longer if I haven't thought of what to wear the night before or by the time I get out of the shower. How long does your morning routine take?

Purple and Black

Monday, February 25, 2013 10:45 PM

Ummm, I don't really have anything to say. I stayed up too late watching the Oscars, then had a frustrating day at work. Now I need to get to bed at a decent hour for an early morning tomorrow!

10 Ways to Wear a White Pinstriped Shirt

Saturday, February 23, 2013 3:38 PM

I didn't shop much in college, so I remember specifically that I bought this shirt on the same trip to Target as my favorite skirt (seen in the final pic here) and my corduroy jacket. It has held up well, though it's always been a little see-through due to the thin fabric. There's nothing special about the way I've worn it. The stripes — which are silver and black side by side — are subtle, and I've mostly used the shirt as a way to make outfits slightly more interesting, especially in pattern mixes.

Below the Belt

Friday, February 22, 2013 10:39 PM

The other day I saw a forum link to this post at Extra Petite about using a belt to secure a shirt over a dress. I figured I should try it with this new/thrifted dress because its low neckline and shiny silver fabric make it inappropriate for work unless the top is covered. I found that knotting the shirt made it too bulky in the back — it appears that Jean and the blogger who inspired her both used shirts with very lightweight fabric. So I untied the shirttails, rolled them up and used safety pins to fasten them in front and back. A stretchy belt was perfect for holding it all in place.

Considering how often I layer button-front shirts under pullover sweaters, I'm kind of amazed I've never paired these two before. In fact, it appears I've never worn this shirt under any pullover. This turned out to be kind of perfect, though. The silky (read: polyester) fabric of the shirt didn't fight with the sweater, so I didn't have to struggle to get the layers to align correctly or adjust them throughout the day. Obviously the colors work out great with this particular pairing, and the cableknit of the sweater helped to hide buttons and other lumps and bumps. I couldn't tell you why I didn't think of this before.

Target Teals

Wednesday, February 20, 2013 10:17 PM

I stopped at Target the other day to pick up a new license plate frame (mine was broken, and the front plate was about to fall off — fortunately, my coworker gave me a heads-up about it), and while I was there I took a look through the clearance racks. It turned out to be a productive stop. I picked up three things: these pants, jeans and a tank top. Coincidentally, they're all teal, though the jeans and tank top are a might brighter shade. And all for less than $20.

These pants are cuffed twice. Uncuffed, they met the tops of my booties, and I worried that my ankles were getting lost. These new tights kept my ankles a little warmer and reduced the contrast between my pasty legs and the booties. Some fishnet trouser socks also would have been nice, if I owned any.

How was everyone's long weekend? J and I packed in a lot, even staying close to home. There was dinner with his mom and stepdad, two movies, a New York Times Sunday crossword and, best of all, Jeff Mangum in concert! That was a show I thought I'd never get to see. He went a decade without touring, then announced a fairly limited run in fall 2011. There were shows in Cambridge and Boston, but tickets for both were scooped up by scalpers, and they resold for hundreds of dollars because of the pent-up demand. J and I were so disappointed.

But I guess Mangum has found touring more tolerable this time around, because he keeps going, and on Sunday he made it to Portland (it was supposed to be Feb. 9 but was postponed because of the blizzard). It was an amazing experience — just Mangum and his acoustic guitar, and Julian Koster on singing saw for two songs in the encore. The songs are sad, but the audience was so full of joy! And yeah, I cried.

10 Ways to Wear Taupe Pants

Saturday, February 16, 2013 1:11 PM

I bought these pants at LOFT about 18 months ago. The fit is not perfect because they're a "curvy" fit, but the color is versatile. Maybe this it would be better described as mushroom brown rather than taupe, I don't know. Whatever you call it, the grayish hue and black pinstripes make the pants perfect for mixing brown and black or other neutrals. And apparently with blue, too.

The Waiting Pile

Friday, February 15, 2013 11:08 PM

My sweater drawer is pretty much full. I took this one out the other day and set it aside in a sort of transitional pile where things sometimes wait before they end up in the bag for Goodwill. Today I found a way to wear it, but if I don't do so again before summer arrives it'll be donated.

Vegan Burgers and "Nashville"

Thursday, February 14, 2013 10:05 PM

No Valentine's Day celebration for us, not that I mind too much. J came home from work for some sweet potato burgers, and now I'm watching last night's "Nashville" on my own.

Seafoam and Teal

Wednesday, February 13, 2013 10:56 PM

This shirt and skirt are not as identical in color as these photos make them appear (the skirt is more saturated), but they are so complementary I couldn't resist wearing them together. The lace layer added some texture and kept me from looking like one big block of bluish-green.

For the Boss and Me

Tuesday, February 12, 2013 11:30 PM

The big boss came to our office for a meeting today, so I went a little conservative with a button-front shirt, black tights and classic pumps. But with my favorite skirt, a pattern mix and a couple of secondhand pieces, this outfit still felt like me.
