This was actually yesterday's outfit. I didn't get around to posting it last night because I had to go to bed really early, and then I didn't take pictures this morning because I had to leave really early for a fully day of training at work. Today I wore a white striped T-shirt I picked up at the clothing swap a couple of weeks ago, which I'd just washed last night. After a long day and week at work, I wanted to relax with a glass of wine. And when I opened the bottle of Malbec, I splashed some on my new-to-me shirt. Dammit.

Repeat Down to the Shoes

Wednesday, October 23, 2013 11:37 PM

Today's outfit was very, very similar to the one I put together the first time I wore this skirt. It shouldn't really be a surprise; with a red and black skirt, I'm going to have to stick mostly with neutral tops, and white, red and black is possibly my favorite color combination. I thought that I'd worn my pointed-toe pumps with the previous outfit, so I went for these wedges today, only to realize just now that they were one more repeated element.

Pointy and Shiny

Tuesday, October 22, 2013 11:55 PM

New shoes today. I decided my black flats needed updating because of their round toes and scuffs that are increasingly difficult to cover with shoe polish. I've wanted a pair of shiny, pointed-toe flats for a while but never found any that were right. The trend for pointy shoes has worked out in my favor. I like that these don't add too much length to my feet, even though I went up a half-size so my toes wouldn't be pinched.

Warm and Cool

Monday, October 21, 2013 11:30 PM

I don't think this worked. The sweater and skirt pair well because they're both cool-toned, but the warm cognac of the boots just doesn't go, even though the skirt and boots are both shades of brown. Even black boots would be better with this skirt than cognac.

Another Black Dress

Friday, October 18, 2013 11:30 PM

I went to Target the other day to try on this striped blazer, which was too big, but I also found this dress on the clearance rack. I tried to talk myself out of buying it because I hardly need another black dress, and it's a little on the short side for work. But I was won over by the fit, the box pleats, the pockets, the stretchy fabric and the possibilities for layering jumper-style, as I did today. I think the high neckline makes up for the shortness of the skirt, and I decided to make room for it in my closet by getting rid of my oldest dress, the black one I bought for my high school graduation nearly 10 years ago. It was time to let go.

P.S. I have no idea why the shot of my belt and sleeve is so grainy and washed out. It looks much better on my hard drive than in Blogger.

The Third

Thursday, October 17, 2013 10:32 PM

Today's our third wedding anniversary, but J's working, as he does every weeknight. Our fancy-schmancy dinner out will have to wait for the weekend.

Here's a very basic outfit. It's even kind of boring. I prefer to think of it as simple. And you know, simplicity is a good thing.

Weekend Gloating

Tuesday, October 15, 2013 11:30 PM

Who here had a great weekend? I know I did! I picked up some new-to-me clothes at a swap, made apple-jalapeno jam, toured a couple of creameries with my brother and J and went to Sunday night's incredible Red Sox game. And even though I didn't have a long weekend, Monday was a holiday for my company. I was the only person working, which made for one of those quiet, relaxing days when you can get around to things that have been piling up.

10 Ways to Wear a Black Cropped Blazer

Sunday, October 13, 2013 12:00 PM

This cropped blazer is most useful to wear with skirts because a longer blazer would throw off the proportions. But it also can work with pants, as long as I wear a longer top underneath.

The Free One

Friday, October 11, 2013 10:40 PM

One of the reasons I chose the navy sweater I wore yesterday over the alternative at Gap is that H&M was having a buy-one-get-one-free sale on some of its sweaters. This gray cardigan was the free one. Both for neutral mixes and to wear with the colorful skirts I have, I think a basic gray cardigan will be really useful.

Sized Up

Thursday, October 10, 2013 11:30 PM

I don't usually go for oversized, but it was just what I was looking for in a navy sweater this fall. I went up a size when I found this sweater at H&M. (Gap had an option that looked good, too, with a lattice pattern on the front.) It'll work with jeans and skirts and with button-front shirts layered underneath, and it's sooooo comfortable.

Booties Are Back

Wednesday, October 9, 2013 11:32 PM

Today's cool temps meant it was time to haul out these booties again. For a pair of $40 boots from Target, they're incredibly comfortable, and they've held up pretty well, though up close you can see some wear starting to show. So just don't look close. And sorry about the crazy hair, too.

Purple Pleats and Brown Tweed

Monday, October 7, 2013 11:30 PM

It's not common for me to wear a skirt twice in less than a week. Today's outfit started with the T-shirt, which I won't have many more opportunities to wear this year, and the skirt was a nice complement, a neutral that brought out the warmth of the purple.

Grunge Equestrian

Sunday, October 6, 2013 11:54 PM

This outfit started out with a little bit of inspiration from Christine and finished with my brand-new riding boots. All in all, it was a casual, comfortable outfit for a day at work when I was pretty much the only one at the office.

Saturday Night

9:38 AM

This is what I wore to work yesterday, but I was so wiped out that I completely forgot to blog afterward. I got out of work at a reasonable hour, and we got dinner at the new dim sum place in town. But the service was very slow, so dinner took more than two hours. We came home and watched an hour of TV afterward, and then I had to call it a night and stumble into bed. Pictures were entirely forgotten.

10 Ways to Wear a Yellow Pencil Skirt

Saturday, October 5, 2013 12:00 PM

Colored pants and skirts can be so useful, especially if your tops are kind of boring, like a lot of mine are. Nearly any colored bottom will work with neutrals, of course, but you should also look for a color that complements at least one color that's prominently featured in your wardrobe. Yellow was a good choice for me because I wear lots of blue, which looks really fresh with blues. It also made sense for me to buy a yellow skirt because I really like the color — it's so cheerful — but I can't wear it near my face because of my pale, cool complexion.

The only outfit here that I really don't like is the one with the gray T-shirt and tights. I think the problem is that there's not enough contrast. I'll pair the skirt with more blacks this fall and winter.
