Archive for November 2012

You guys. November is over. I guess that means it's my last chance to recap our Thanksgiving menu, which I meant to do days ago but have kept forgetting. J and I have pretty much finished off the leftovers. We like leftovers, so so we don't try to turn them into something else. Here's what I cooked/baked for last Thursday:

Parsnip soup (no recipe for this one, I just sauteed the vegetables, simmered them and then pureed everything; seasoned with lemon juice and cayenne powder)
Spinach and cheese puff (I don't know what a "puff" is, but this is somewhere between a gratin and a quiche.)
Sourdough stuffing with sausage, apples and raisins (a little fennel added, too)
Cornish hens with lemon and herbs (I doctored these a bit by using some tarragon-shallot compound butter I'd had in the freezer for awhile, rather than regular unsalted.)
Apple mosaic tart with salted caramel glaze (also makes a great breakfast)

Taken to the Cleaners

Thursday, November 29, 2012 11:30 PM

I wore the studded belt again today, only this time the studs are hidden and it wasn't the belt I wanted to wear. I tried two others first, but they weren't long enough — though I've worn both with pants before. I didn't figure out what was wrong until I went to put on shoes and realized these pants are at least an inch shorter than the last time I wore them. The dry-cleaner shrank my pants! I thought part of the point of taking clothes to the cleaners is so things like that don't happen. In addition to being too short for most of my heels, these are now more snug in the crotchal region, the zipper pulls a bit, and the waistband sits at a lower, wider part of my hips. That's why the belts didn't fit.

Stripes, Pearls and Studs

Wednesday, November 28, 2012 9:35 PM

This is possibly the preppiest outfit I've ever worn: stripes, cardigan, pearls, pastels, pretty much everything except the studded belt. My favorite thing to do with this belt — which I also did here — is to wear it under an outer layer and turn  it around so you see the studs, instead of the relatively bare area right around the buckle.

Two Birds, One Scarf

Tuesday, November 27, 2012 10:44 PM

After putting on my dress and tights, I knew the outfit had two shortcomings. I needed something on my top half to break up the expanse of pink. And I also needed to make the purple and black of the tights and boots connect with something else so the outfit would look somewhat coherent. Fortunately, this scarf perfectly served both purposes.

Look how opaque (and matte) these tights are! It's because they're lined with fleece. I first heard about fleece tights last winter and picked these up in early spring, when they were on sale and it was too warm to wear them. But we're firmly ensconced in winter now, so here they are. The tights were actually a little too warm at points during the day, but I was glad for them when walking home tonight.

Matching Optional

Friday, November 23, 2012 11:23 PM

My parents stayed with us overnight, and when my mom saw my outfit in the morning, she asked, "Does that match?" My response was to ask her (with a smile, I swear), "Does it have to?" I rarely receive comments on my outfits, so it was a little reminder that what seems like a simple pattern mix in blog land — two classic geometrics that both include black — doesn't look so simple to the rest of the world.

Not My Thanksgiving Outfit

Thursday, November 22, 2012 12:15 PM

This is the outfit I wore to work the day before Thanksgiving (i.e., yesterday). But I forgot to blog last night because when I got home I dove right into making parsnip soup and an apple tart to get a head start on cooking our Thanksgiving meal, which I'm preparing by myself. Today I'm in a slouchy, washable cardigan, which is perfect for preparing and then eating a big meal. My jeans, which are extra-snug after J put them through the dryer, are another matter.

The wrinkles in this dress are stubborn. It looked fine in the mirror, but the wrinkles showed up in the first few pictures that I took, and they didn't come out after a quick steaming. The steaming had to be quick because I was wearing the dress — probably not a good idea, but I didn't want to have to take it off after I'd gotten the collar and sleeves all adjusted.

Early Thanksgiving

Monday, November 19, 2012 9:35 PM

Because November started on a Thursday, this year's Thanksgiving is the earliest it can possibly be. And then we celebrated even earlier this past weekend, with dinner at J's father's house on Saturday and brunch at his mom's on Sunday. We have a fridge full of leftovers even before preparing our own spread to host my parents on Thursday.

10 Ways to Wear a White Button-Front Shirt

Sunday, November 18, 2012 10:07 AM

Here's another extremely basic piece of clothing. The white button-front shirt is so basic, in fact, that it's on nearly every list of must-have wardrobe items. The challenge is to keep basic from being boring. It looks like maybe I'm not doing a great job of that, as I've worn the shirt with neutrals nine times out of 10. I guess the timelessness of a white shirt guides me to assemble outfits that could more easily be described as "classic" than most of what I wear.

As to the garment itself, it's a fine specimen of the white button-front shirt. It's one of Banana Republic's fitted non-iron sateen shirts with a bit of stretch (how's that for a mouthful of descriptors?). I bought it two years ago when I had a 40 percent off coupon — I think the full $60 would have been tough for me to swallow for such a basic item. The fabric is soft and really doesn't wrinkle that much, and I love the fit, which is relaxed but nipped in just enough not to obscure my figure. The only feature I don't like as much is the collar, which is gigantic and has the tendency to curl up at the tips and to spread out really wide.

Boot Experimentation

Thursday, November 15, 2012 10:57 PM

I knew I could wear these cropped pants with tall boots (although I haven't done it yet), but this post at You Look Fab prompted me to try pairing them with these too-tall ankle boots. The pants are juuusst too short to tuck into the boots. I wore tights underneath to protect against cold shins and maintain an unbroken line of black in case the pants hem crept up. Unfortunately, the pants are unlined, so they stuck to the tights all day. And I don't really like the look. I probably won't do this again.

Aren't these pumps precious? The perforated cap-toe detail is definitely menswear-inspired, but the T-strap and patent leather are highly feminine. I especially love the shape of the heel, which Wikipedia tells me is a prism. It's a nice change of pace from a stiletto.

Sparkly Cincher

Tuesday, November 13, 2012 11:30 PM

On top of the color blocking, pleats, volume on top and on bottom, and big boots, a sparkly belt may have been a bit much today. But the outfit needed a belt to look finished, and none of my others looked right at all, so I decided to just go with it.

ETA: I'm belatedly linking up to Everybody, Everywear. After there was no theme for October, I forgot to check it this month; posts on other blogs reminded me of it. But it was a simple theme, and I just so happened to wear boots on the right day. Because that's what you do in fall.
