Thrift Find for September

Sunday, September 30, 2012 11:30 PM

I made a few thrifting trips this month, but I came away with only one item:

Silk J. Crew scarf, Goodwill South Portland, $3

There were other things I considered buying, like a pinkish-purple cardigan and a bright pink button-front shirt. They were in good condition, they fit well, and they were in colors that would work well in my wardrobe. But I couldn't pull the trigger on the purchase. I stood there, holding them in my hands, and asked myself, "Did I want a pinkish-purple cardigan or a bright pink shirt before I saw these?" Well, no.

That in itself didn't mean they wouldn't make good purchases. I've thrifted clothing before that I didn't anticipate finding or wanting, and many of those pieces have played a valuable part in my wardrobe. And it's easy to justify pretty much anything when it's $3 or $5 or even $8. But even though the sweater and shirt totaled only $11, I put them back because they would have put me that much farther away from buying some of the items that have been on my wish list for months, like a yellow pencil skirt and a bright pink skirt and black booties and knee-high cognac boots.

I'd run into what's perhaps the biggest limitation of thrifting and other forms of secondhand shopping: finding something specific. I haven't thrifted a skirt of any sort in months, and even eBay hasn't turned up the yellow pencil skirt or full, pink skirt I'm seeking. So I did a little online shopping, and I have some packages on the way. Everything cost much more than $11, but if the items work and breathe new life into my wardrobe, it'll be worth it.

Friday Colors

Friday, September 28, 2012 10:21 PM

After three days of black and gray, I was ready for some color to close out the week, so it was my pink/raspberry/maroon/whatever jeans to the rescue. I need some more colored bottoms!

To keep from looking too stuffy, I rolled up the sleeves of this blazer when I first put it on. But when I looked in the full-length mirror, something was wrong. The shortened pants and sleeves made it look as though I'd experienced a sudden growth spurt. So I unrolled the sleeves and went about my day all business-like.

Good Jew, Bad Jew

Wednesday, September 26, 2012 11:21 PM

Yep, another scarf.

Also, I worked today (and wrote a blog post after services last night, obviously), which is a big no-no on Yom Kippur. I did fast starting last night, however, other than taking some hot tea on my morning commute because I thought I'd be dangerously sleepy otherwise — and even with the caffeine, I was still drowsy. Oddly, I didn't feel especially hungry most of the day, but I did find it increasingly difficult to focus on my work as the afternoon wore on. I am very grateful to have access to good food in my everyday life, and an experience like this provides a tangible example of why it's so important for schools to provide free meals to children who might not receive adequate nutrition at home.

Eschewing Leather

Tuesday, September 25, 2012 11:11 PM

I wore all black today in part because I'm intrigued by Dotty's use of neutrals (though she tends toward lighter shades) and would like to try doing more of that, and in part because a Very Serious Outfit was appropriate for the start of Yom Kippur tonight.

For the Kol Nidre service, I changed into a pair of cheap fabric flats. A number of people in the congregation, including our rabbi, wore sneakers with their nice clothes because you're not supposed to wear leather shoes on Yom Kippur. The prohibition is about denying oneself the luxury and comfort of leather but also because it's incongruous to seek forgiveness for wrongdoing while wearing the skin of another animal. I don't cover my hair or even wear a headcovering of any sort at the synagogue, but this is one instance where dressing according to religious dictates feels right to me.

Do any of you choose your clothes based on religious or ethical reasons?

Another Scarf

Monday, September 24, 2012 11:06 PM

Seems I'm on a bit of a scarf kick. I suppose it's because I'm not feeling very inspired by the building blocks of my wardrobe lately, and scarves are an easy way to add some interest. Soon, it'll be time for scarves that add warmth, too.

Tunic as Tunic

Friday, September 21, 2012 11:53 PM

The two previous times I've worn this tunic, I tucked it in like any other shirt. Well, here's what it looks like when actually worn as a tunic.

Sweater Out

Thursday, September 20, 2012 11:30 PM

I think I'm finished with this sweater. In more than a year I've worn it only twice (first time was here, and I didn't like that outfit very much). It's so old I can't remember how long I've had it, and it's definitely showing its age with some fading. The cap sleeves are not particularly flattering, and though I wear lots of blue, I haven't found this shade to be all that versatile. OK, I've talked myself into it. It's time for the sweater to go.

Good Bye, Linen!

Wednesday, September 19, 2012 11:18 PM

Not only did I wear a cardigan today, it was also the first time this season I pulled out my trusty corduroy jacket. I think that means it's time to put away this linen skirt.

A Little Twirl

Tuesday, September 18, 2012 11:09 PM

I'm not pregnant. That's just a phantom baby caused by the movement in my skirt when I decided to do a little twirl during picture time. I guess my favorite color combination of red and turquoise just made me happy this morning, in spite of the fact that I'm way too tired for Tuesday.

26 or 16?

Monday, September 17, 2012 11:36 PM

In today's outfit I felt professional and mature. So it was ironic that my skin had decided to rewind by a decade and give me a face full of zits as bad as anything I experienced as a teenager, including that big honking one right below my left eye. Thanks, skin.

10 Ways to Wear a Salmon Button-Front Shirt

Saturday, September 15, 2012 5:45 PM

This shirt is one of the oldest pieces in my wardrobe. In the summer of 2006, just before I began my first professional internship, I realized I owned absolutely no clothing appropriate for an office job. My mother generously took me shopping, and we picked up several items at New York & Company. I had never shopped there before, but clothes from that store came to form the core of my growing work wardrobe over the next couple of years. I haven't shopped there in quite a while, but I still have a few of the tops.

I describe this shirt as salmon-colored because the pink is just slightly tinged with orange. I have another shirt in the same style, purchased at the same time, that's in my bag of clothes destined for Goodwill because it wrinkles easily, and I think the stripes are somewhat dated. I last wore it here. I anticipate hanging onto the salmon one for awhile. The fabric has held up well, and I still like the color, so it doesn't bother me that the short is shorter than what you'd find in stores today or that the hem has a tendency to curl a bit by the end of the day. The sleeves are sort of an awkward length, so I always wear them rolled.

Clashing Patterns?

Friday, September 14, 2012 11:56 PM

Wearing black and brown is an ancient taboo, of course. And I think that in many cases, green and blue don't go together so well. So what did I do today? Why, I wore a blue-gray-and-black print top with pants in a Glen plaid of brown with green stripes!

Freshly Cut

Thursday, September 13, 2012 11:30 PM

So after weeks-verging-on-months of trying to get an appointment with my apparently increasingly popular hairstylist, I finally made it to the salon today, before I headed off to work for a late shift. Even though I had just a bit more than 2 inches taken off, I felt much lighter today. And of course, a professional blowout always makes the day better.

The Subtle Match

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 11:23 PM

It's subtle, but these shoes actually match this tunic quite well because much of the print is in pink and orange. Which also made my pink and orange necklace the perfect pairing the last time I wore the kameez.
