Not Hot

Thoroughly ME: J Crew Minnie pants, vintage Cole Haan cognac loafers

This morning I dressed for what I expected to be the last truly hot day of the year, with high temperatures of nearly 90 in the forecast. Instead, the temperature peaked at about 72 degrees before cooling back down when it started to rain.

This is my second wearing of this tunic, and both times I've also worn this black necklace and belt to help tie everything together. Obviously, there's no black in the tunic, so I needed to add a bit of the color in the top half to connect with the flower on this skirt and the black pinstripes on these pants, as well as the black shoes I wore in both outfits.

Finally Fixed

Thoroughly ME: stripes on stripes with pleated midi skirt

When I bought this top, the neckline had a sewn-in strip of elastic that was buckling with age, giving the neckline a warped, dimpled look (you can see it in one of the detail shots in this post). I put up with it for several wearings because I was worried about what would happen if I ripped out the elastic. Well, I finally got around to it, and the other night I followed up with some iron-on hem tape to put the neckline back together. Much better, right?

Foiled by the Rain

It was pouring before I left for work this morning, so I put on flats for traction and a blazer that would be too warm if it were dry and sunny out. So of course, it cleared up right when I got to work.

Easy Dressing

Monday, August 27, 2012 10:42 PM

I am so glad that since early July, J is no longer working weekends. It's allowed us to enjoy some of the best parts of summer, like rafting, a Red Sox game, berry-picking and local festivals. But this weekend, even though the season is coming to a close, we decided we'd had enough after several consecutive busy weekends. We ventured out to the local hat store and for dinner with another couple, but other than that it was all sleeping in, watching "Firefly" on Netflix, reading, doing a crossword and cleaning the apartment. This morning, I was still too relaxed to put much effort into my clothes, so I took the easy way out with a dress and some colorful accessories.

Vanity for Your Feet

Friday, August 24, 2012 11:44 PM

Is vanity sizing for shoes a thing? I've never heard of it, but these vintage Cole Haan loafers are a full size larger than my usual. I almost didn't try them on, but I'm so glad I gave them a chance. The leather is well worn and so soft and comfy, and yet still looks almost new. And although they're a leeettle long for my feet, the AA width keeps them on securely.

Look Away!

Wednesday, August 22, 2012 11:30 PM

Yes, my face looks dumb here. I took a bunch of photos this morning, and this was the best I could do. I looked just fine in the mirror, but some days are just not meant for pictures, I guess. Like every picture day in elementary school. Eh, at least polka dots always look good.

In Color

Tuesday, August 21, 2012 11:52 PM

I think I need some more colorful skirts — really, all I have is the tomato red one. Navy is a neutral, and burgundy nearly so, or at the most a very muted color. So I'm glad this dress is at least sort of conducive to layering and that the weather wasn't too hot today.

Today's outfit was inspired in part by the colors of the bruises that I bear on the lower half of my body after spending yesterday rafting the Penobscot River.

One bruise, more than two inches wide, is from the knotted rope that was right next to my seat on the raft; every time we went over a rapid, I would lean toward the middle of the boat and end up on top of the knot. The others mostly resulted from the time our raft flipped going over a 13-foot waterfall. As I swam back to the raft, I went over several rocks that left cuts and bruises on both knees, my left buttcheek and my lower back on my right side.

Despite the bruises, muscle soreness and a pair of destroyed sneakers, I had a great time!

Criminal Responsibility

Friday, August 17, 2012 11:26 PM

My credit card was stolen. I'm almost certain that I left it at the table when we went out to lunch on Wednesday, so I think someone at the restaurant took it, though I suppose it's possible I dropped it outside or at some point in the 30 minutes before I realized I didn't have it. I thought I'd just go back to the restaurant to pick it up, so I didn't report it right away, but then I started to see charges show up. It appears that my card was stolen by the world's most responsible thief; instead of buying gadgets or playing online poker, or whatever, s/he got a cash advance and bought gas and groceries. I'm pretty sure the credit card will cancel those charges, so I just hope the thief was hard up and really needed that $200 as a lifeline.

Oh, yes. My outfit. This is the third time in four weeks that I've done the knotted-shirt thing (previous iterations here and here). And even though I think it looks best with a full skirt, and I don't much care for A-line skirts in any case, I think this is my favorite of the three. Stark black and white were just made for each other, weren't they?

Messy Eater

Thursday, August 16, 2012 10:56 PM

I'd never win any awards for table manners. It's elbows on the table, licking knives, snapping up the last of something before anyone else can — basically anything uncouth and uncivilized. I like to think that I'm just eating with gusto. But sometimes that means I make a bit of a mess, and lately it seems like I can't make it through the workday without wearing some of my lunch. It probably doesn't help that I always eat at my desk rather than a proper table.

Today I had a bit of a mishap while trying to soak up the last juices of my ratatouille with a piece of bread and dribbled a few drops on my skirt. Tonight I applied cornstarch and a spray stain remover to the grease spots, and now I just have to hope they come out in the wash.

Dressed Down

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 11:37 PM

Here's that dress I picked up last month. It was perfect for a full but also relaxing day off. J and I went to lunch and a showing of "Beasts of the Southern Wild" before he had to go to work, and then I picked up our CSA share, bought some mascara and went consignment shopping (coming up empty-handed), read and cooked dinner.

Thoroughly ME: monochromatic burgundy outfit with Target T and vintage skirt

When I saw that this month's theme for Everybody Everywear was monochromatic, I knew I had to go with burgundy, because it's the only non-neutral in which I have both a top and a bottom. That's kind of remarkable, considering how many clothes I own. The best part of this, however, was probably that it prodded me to add another burgundy, or rather garnet, piece to the mix: This pendant that J bought me for Chanukah a whole eight months ago. After buying this brooch last month, I finally had a chain on which to string it.

Pants Help

Monday, August 13, 2012 11:32 PM

I'm not feeling very inspired lately, especially with pants-based outfits. As I've mentioned before, I find pants inherently boring compared to the variety of colors, patterns and silhouettes available in work-appropriate skirts and dresses. I probably should buy a pair of red pants like these, because red is always the right answer in my book. And also some black pants in a similar cut, just to give myself more options for the silhouette of an outfit. What other sorts of interesting pants are out there that would work in a business casual setting?

Always Look on the Bright Side

Sunday, August 12, 2012 11:25 PM

I'm very disappointed that the Olympics are over. The closing ceremony, however, did make up for at least one glaring omission from the opening ceremony. Amid the children's fiction villains, David Bowie masks and Mr. Bean's cameo, there was a major British cultural icon missing: Monty Python. So I was very pleased to see Eric Idle come out to dance Banghra and sing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life." So in that spirit, here's a silver lining: Because Rio's in the southern hemisphere, the wait until the next summer Olympics is only three and a half years!

Thoroughly ME: American Eagle chambray shirt, brocade skirt

My tripod went a bit wonky when I was taking the detail photo below, but I kind of liked the tilt, so I decided not to straighten it in Picasa. Bonus: You can see a bit of my eyeliner, which is not something I wear to work very often, especially on my top lashline. But the pencil I used today, Urban Decay Binge, is a lovely midnight blue that complemented my shirt and is a lot less harsh than black. I bought a holiday kit of several half-size Urban Decay pencils back in December 2010 and haven't used them much, but I definitely want Binge in the full size now.
