It's Greek to Me

J didn't feel like cooking tonight, so we decided to use one of our restaurant gift certificates from Chanukah to go to Emilitsa, which can be difficult to get into on weekends. It was amazing! J and I like to share dishes when we go out to eat, so tonight we ordered a trio of dips (tzatziki, pureed salmon roe and a salsa-like concoction with eggplant and tomatoes), fried chicken livers and an entree of lamb chops, which were perfectly charred on the outside, juicy red inside and served with a heaping pile of lemony sauteed spinach. But the highlight was dessert: berries, cream and a vanilla-Metaxa-black pepper sauce. I swooned over the texture of the cream, which was stiff and smooth, somewhere between whipped cream — which I don't really like — and yogurt.

One of the trips J and I hope to take someday is a cruise of the Greek isles, and I think I may be looking forward to the food most of all. The Greeks use all the best ingredients, like lemon juice, olive oil, greens, feta, yogurt and honey — how could it be anything short of delicious?
