Boots and Pumps

Monday, December 31, 2012 11:30 PM

In all previous cases, the shoes I've worn to shoot outfit pictures are the actual ones I've worn all day. In this case, however, the sidewalks were still sloppy from Saturday night's snowstorm, and I knew I'd be in the office all day, so I wore my snow boots (below) to walk to and from my car, then wore the red pumps only indoors.

After a couple of years in which J and I went through major life changes, like getting married and moving from Ohio to Maine, 2012 was more low-key. The biggest things that happened to us involved major health crises in both our families, so to be honest it wasn't the best year. But we have a happy marriage and good jobs, and we live in a great city, state and region. So we have a lot to be glad for and a good outlook for 2013.

Highs and Lows of 2012

Sunday, December 30, 2012 6:30 PM

I wouldn't have said that my style changed in 2012, but a clear patterned emerged when I reviewed my outfits of the last year to identify the best and worst. I can't put my finger on whatever shifted, but more of my least favorite outfits are from early in the year, while my favorites are heavily weighted toward the latter half of the year.

Other than the repeated appearance of some favorite garments, I can't really identify any common threads in my highlights from 2012. There are some simple outfits with few pieces, and others with lots of layering; there are bright colors and neutrals; pattern mixing and classic solids. And though my style is usually extremely feminine, there are even some masculine touches here and there.

I'm putting my least-favorite outfits behind a jump because I've already put enough photos on the main page with this post. These outfits are mostly awkward or boring. There are tops I shouldn't have tucked in, proportions that looked strange, colors that clashed and other things that looked much better in my head than in real life.

After the Snow

Friday, December 28, 2012 11:30 PM

I got permission to work from home on Thursday, which was a relief because the roads were a mess thanks to the 8 inches of so or snow that fell steadily all day (and switched to sleet for a few hours here in Portland). Today it was back to the office.

By the way, it is very hard to take pictures of the backs of one's boots.

A Retread

Wednesday, December 26, 2012 11:30 PM

Before putting on today's outfit, I scrolled through Picasa to make sure I hadn't worn it before. It wasn't a repeat, but I had good reason to believe it might be, because it's similar to this outfit from March, just with the colors of the blazer and pants swapped. And this is a color combination I've worn more than once before. What can I say? Burgundy looks great with black and/or gray.

The Secret

Tuesday, December 25, 2012 11:57 PM

My parents came to visit for Christmas Eve, and my brother flew up from Florida. We went out to Cinque Terre-Vignola for their Feast of the Seven Fishes, an Italian Christmas tradition, then they stayed the night. I loved having them visit, but no one in my life except for J knows about this blog. So this morning, when my brother was sleeping on the couch and my mom was watching out the living room windows while the snow fell, I couldn't take pictures. I had to wait until after work, when it was long dark outside and I had to rearrange my photo-taking space to make the best of the artificial lighting. Merry Christmas!

10 Ways to Wear a Pink Cardigan

Sunday, December 23, 2012 11:04 PM

I thrifted this cardigan in January, but it didn't take long to wear it in 10 blogged outfits. Cardigans are of course immensely useful as layering pieces, and bright pink is one of the most versatile colors in my wardrobe. I've worn it with several black-and-white patterns, blues, purple and a teal floral. This Banana Republic sweater is 100 percent cotton, so it's best for spring and fall, but with layering I can wear it into winter.

I enjoyed a good hair day today, thanks to the cut and blow-out I got on my day off on Thursday. It was a pretty productive day off; I caught up on sleep, caught up on TV with J before he went to work, did some reading, bought a whole lot of groceries and made two dishes for my office's Christmas potluck today. I knew I could count on other people to bring the sorts of foods we all like to indulge in at this time of year, especially sweets. I decided to provide some healthy alternatives: this citrus fruit salad, slightly tweaked (only a couple of tsp of sugar, so it would be more of a breakfast food than a dessert), and a plate of roasted vegetables (asparagus, eggplant, canned artichoke hearts and balsamic-glazed red onions). I got a few compliments on the vegetables, so I think other people appreciated taking a break from heavier foods as well.

Blah Boots

Wednesday, December 19, 2012 11:16 PM

I am trying to get rid of these boots. I've had them for three years, and I've grown tired of the square toe, the cheap material and the in-between height of the heels. I want to split their function between two pairs of boots. J bought me some sleeker high-heeled boots for my birthday — last seen here — and then I want some black riding boots that will be super-comfortable for walking around but still dressy enough to wear with skirts. I tried on several nice-looking pairs at Macy's last night, but all were too wide for my skinny little calves, and I didn't find anything appealing on a few websites I checked. So I turned to these boots on yet another wet, somewhat icy day, and they'll have to do for an upcoming vacation, as well.

Another Name for Burgundy

Tuesday, December 18, 2012 10:39 PM

If I were trying to goose my search results, I'd say these were burgundy tights or oxblood tights. But I prefer to use the official name from We Love Colors because I did my own search for pictures of people wearing the maroon tights. I wasn't sure if I could trust the little swatch on the We Love Colors website. In case anyone ends up here in a similar search, you should know these are just a smidge more purple than they appear on my screen.

No Stains

Monday, December 17, 2012 11:14 PM

Leather boots look and feel lovely, but sometimes artificial materials have their benefits. Last night and today we had 4-5 inches of snow, and I didn't want to subject real leather to get sodden with snowmelt and stained with salt.

Speaking of stains, I momentarily thought this skirt was lost, after only three wearings. While reapplying lipstick at my desk today, I dropped the open tube in my lap and got a big pink splotch on my skirt. Fortunately, it was saved after dabbing with Dawn, blotting and rinsing in cold water.

Football Tonight

Sunday, December 16, 2012 10:17 PM

J and I are watching one of the stranger football games I've ever seen, between the Patriots and the 49ers. The weather in Foxboro is pretty much the worst ever, 35 degrees and pouring. There have been turnovers galore, a bad pass interference penalty and a weird and confusing call of illegal touching on a punt, plus holding, that seemed more like something we would have seen in the first few weeks of the season with the replacement refs. I know I have to go to bed very soon, because I haven't had nearly enough sleep this weekend, but this is the kind of game that tempts me to stay up past my bedtime.
